Five things to do today
It’s the last day of what’s been a fab Freshers’ Week, sob! Make the most of your last day of freedom
1. Beat the hang for the Freshers’ Fayre
Although you’re probably majorly hanging after Starfields and Hot Tub Time Machine last night, make sure you show your face at the Freshers’ Fayre in the Union before it ends at 16:00. The hundreds of St Andrews societies and subcomittees will be there, and I promise you that there’ll be something you want to join. From Law Society to Tunnocks Caramel Wafer Society, there really is something to suit everyone’s taste.
2. Eat meat with G&S Society
Feeling boozed-out and craving wholesome food? The Gilbert and Sullivan Society are hosting a welcome BBQ in St Mary’s Quad’s Secret Garden between 16:00 and 19:00, and as well as music and fun chitchat, there’ll be plenty of burgers and buns to satiate your post-Freshers’ needs.
3. Please go ceilidh dancing
I know I’ve told you to try out ceilidh dancing at least twice already, but I really think Freshers’ Week is a good time to learn and practice a dance the Scots love so much. Even if you discover that you don’t really have the knack for ceilidh steps, go to Boys’ Brigade Hall on Kinnessburn Road at 18:00 anyway, as there’ll be plenty of free cake, drink and chatter.
4. Drink champagne with St Andrews’ legal beagles
End Freshers’ Week in style by attending Law Society’s Champagne Social at the Old Course Hotel on Old Station Road between 17:00 and 19:00. If you’re interested in pursuing a career in law after completing your degree, and fancy a glass of something other than vodka and cranberry juice, go along to find out about how the society can help you with your life ambitions.
5. Nod along to harmonious singing
A Capella is a big deal in St Andrews, so the sooner you learn to appreciate beautiful unaccompanied singing, the sooner you’ll feel at home. There are concerts at 19:00 and 22:00 in the Union’s Venue 1, with live performances by all the main groups, such as The Other Guys – the all-male dream team – and The Alley Cats. This is especially relevant for those of you who want to audition to be in a group, as you’ll get a flavour of the kind of thing they sing and the chance to talk to group members.
