St Andrews found to be the cheapest university

Put away the pennies, apparently St Andrews isn’t so expensive after all

Despite the belief that St Andrews is an expensive place for students to study, a survey taken by a well-known price comparison site has suggested otherwise.

MoneySuperMarket has placed St Andrews as the cheapest university location in the UK when it comes to contents insurance, as well as having the lowest home and car crime rates. Overall it was shown to be the most cost effective, even when you take into account weekly rent and the average price of a pint.

Unsurprisingly the most expensive place to study was London, with Oxford being a close second. Cambridge ranked the lowest for accommodation at just £100 a week.

St Andrews ranked top when it came to low crime rates in particular; London car insurance quotes had a rate of 16 claims to every 1000, whereas St Andrews was only 2.1 to 1000.

Insurance experts at MoneySuperMarket have suggested that considering the cost of living has risen considerably over the past few years, St Andrews really does give undergraduates the best deal in terms of living costs. With UK students on average running up a debt of over £44,000 during their degree, the knowledge that St Andrews is actually one of the less expensive areas can only come as a good surprise.
