Friends ’til the end
Take a tour of the best friendships to ever hit the screen.
As graduation approaches, I’ve become rather nostalgic. The thought of my friends and I parting ways has reminded me of the importance of close relationships. These five best friends, set a great example for the kinds of long lasting friendships that we all wish to experience. Excuse me while I sob quietly to myself.
Woody and Buzz (Toy Story): These two are poster children for why we shouldn’t put so much stock in first impressions. It happens. We meet someone, and instantly think we’re going to hate them. Maybe it’s because of a bad joke, their music taste, or the fact that a prepubescent boy prefers playing with them than you (awkward, Disney…) Regardless, we should always try to remember that taking the time to get to know a person can reveal just how awesome they really are, even if they initially failed to impress. Besides, if the Lizard has taught me anything it’s that it never hurts to have a friend that can fall with style…
Thelma and Louise (Thelma and Louise): These two are the pinnacle of ‘best friendship’ in my book. Granted, I do hope that any future road trips I embark upon with friends skip the ‘driving headfirst into the Grand Canyon’ step. Nonetheless, the fact that these two women are willing to die (and kill, and rob – seriously, watch the movie) for each other still makes me tear up a little inside. That’s what I call true (non-romantic) love!
Timon and Pumbaa (The Lion King): Friendship (noun): A relationship between two social outcasts who bond and accept each other, wart(hogs) and all. Sorry, but I just can’t resist a bad pun opportunity. A dynamic duo, if ever I saw one, Timon and Pumbaa’s friendship has all the elements necessary for a good time: sarcasm, solidarity, along with frequent outbursts of song and/or luau dancing. Am I the only one who’s guilty of channelling their inner Timon whilst on a night out with their BFF? I think not.
“Come on, back me up buddy: Awooooooooooooo…”
Joey and Phoebe (Friends): I won’t lie; This choice is mainly just because I’m a Friends fanatic but I also thought it was nice to have an inter-gender friendship on the list. The idea that boys and girls can’t have a platonic relationship baffles me. These two – along with Haley and Lucas (OTH), Ryan and Summer (The OC) and a whole plethora of others – show that guys and gals don’t have to end up married to mean something to each other. So there.
Lizzie and Fred (Drop Dead Fred): Sometimes, the best friendships are the ones you have going on inside your head. I would expand on that, but I’ve got to dash off – I’m meeting Emma Stone for dinner and a bout of hair-braiding in ten. Toodles!
