Review: 100 100 Word Plays

100 100 Word Plays causes confusion

100 100 Word Plays was intense.

I’ve sat staring at my blank computer screen and annoying my editor with my tardiness for a while because I simply can’t find the words to describe the play. I left Venue 2 with a sense of confusion that I still can’t clarify.

Perhaps I should start at the beginning…The description given in the On the Rocks brochure was vague to say the least, so I walked into Venue 2 with little to no expectations. As soon as we walked through the doors, 100 100 Word Plays began.

Yup, nobody told me it was interactive. Now, I don’t really “do” drama anymore, especially when I don’t know what I’m doing. I feel that I may have been the worst person to try and drag into audience participation.  Nonetheless, they did and I just got more confused from there. The premise of the show was, as far as I can gather, the audience’s “rehabilitation” and we were shown a variety of snippets of different subjects and formats. Beyond that, I’m lost as to what actually happened in the play.

Admittedly, this could be because I didn’t manage to make it to any of the 100 Word Play workshops but I couldn’t help fee as if missed a major clue that would have helped me understand it.  Chatting to other audience members after the show, there was a definite divide between those who managed to whole-heartedly throw themselves into it and the rest of them looked a little dazed.

The one thing that I couldn’t deny was the talent of those involved. It was an incredibly creative and innovative piece, using a clever combination of multimedia and minimalistic props to really enhance the feeling that we were emerged in the dram but I just didn’t quite get it.

Here is my plea: if you saw 100 100 Word Plays, can you explain it to this simpleton?
