Review: Studio 54

We get the low down on GIG’s Studio 54.

Last night saw the return of the annual Global Investment Group’s seventies extravaganza: Studio 54.  Students familiar with GIG’s calendar of events, such as the aptly-named Blackout, will know them for luxuriously-themed parties with, as always, traditional buckets of booze.

This was no exception.  Having hired out the entirety of the Oak Rooms and the Lizard below, guests were given the chance to opt for a  £10 classic or £15 VIP ticket (crazy cheap in St Andrews terms), entailing free shots all night from GIG members, with the latter warranting you entry into the VIP section.  This really was something special, miles away from the Fish Bowl we’re normally acquainted with,  containing a spectacular vodka luge in the shape of 54.

The theme was based on the Studio 54 New York nightclub of the 1970s, famed as much for its glitter as for its A-list glitterati. Guests were encouraged to come in their best 1970s outfits to emulate the original atmosphere, and some of them really went to town.

Dozens of guys in afro wigs and medallion chains accompanied girls in fur, frills and feather boas, alongside a healthy dosage of John Lennon sunglasses.  Those not quite up to dressing the part were aided with a dress-up photo-booth containing various comedy moustaches and voluminous wigs for the snaps; yet another fun dimension added to the night.

Upon entry from 9:30pm, guests were met by glamorous girls with shot trays ushering us up into the Oak Rooms. Bedecked in novelty balloons and with the disco beats of Staying Alive pumping, there awaited yet more girls, this time with double bottles of vodka and very liberal hands!

By 11pm, we moved down to the Lizard where, past the photo-booth, we entered into a sea of yet more balloons and shots, with the Lizard’s infamous light-up dance floor really adding to the theme.  As the crowds swarmed in and the classic rock and pop beats accelerated, we boogied the night away on a packed floor in a time warp until our platforms wore down to dust.  Safe to say GIG maintains its crown for throwing original, well-planned and successful events. You really did have us seeing stars. Yeah baby!
