Stand Up: The Pink Links

There are some new kids on the block, and they’re ready to make a big impression. They’re The Pink Links, and I caught up with President Sophie Stanton and Charities Officer Jessica Norton to find out more about who they are and what they’re all about.

The Pink Links was set up three years ago by a group of girls, after an attack on a female student on campus. They aimed to promote links between young women and a feeling of sisterhood, whilst also helping local charities. Since last year though, there’s an all-new committee and they’re hoping to take things “to a whole new level”. They want to expand the group and are keen to include new members…and contrary to popular belief it’s not just for girls. The name and the logo might have had you fooled but ladies would love to welcome any guy who thinks he can handle the incoming pink jumpers!

There have been understandable comparisons with the well-established Lumsden Club, but the girls were keen to point out how different the two groups are. Currently much smaller than Lumsden, the PLs “aspire to be able to hold events on a similar scale to Pimms one day”. There’s no need to apply to be a member; it’s open to everyone, and they encourage newbies to get involved straight away. They feel Lumsden already has its place on the St Andrews scene and are eager to establish their own, finding their niche as they expand. As part of their efforts to grow as a group, they’re currently looking to become affiliated with the Union, and along with extensive plans for volunteering and fundraising it looks to be an exciting year!

This year, Breast Cancer Care Scotland is the target for their fundraising efforts with a whole string of events planned in the next few months. Their new awareness campaign will be up and running in the next couple of weeks after this weekend’s photoshoot with Shawtography, and they’ll be following this up on the 25th October – National Breast Cancer Day – as they “paint the town pink” on their inaugural fundraising bar crawl.

On the 29th of October they’ll be hosting a pampering evening in conjunction with Charlie Taylor, offering hair styling and nail treatments along with wine and nibbles. Also planned for the future is a Clothes Swap event at the Vic for those St Andreans who want to keep up with the latest library fashions whilst still saving money for all those ball tickets.

The Pink Links have already made quite an impression in St Andrews this year and I’m sure that we’ll be seeing a lot more of them as they continue to expand. For anyone looking to get involved, give them a like on Facebook to keep up to date with their news and events!
