Not that anyone is really keeping track, but once again the University of St Andrews is top of the Scots in the major university league table. The superiority of St Andrews is down to a science again; pause now as we share a sigh of relief.

The Complete University Guide 2014 table ranked St Andrews ahead of the University of Edinburgh, to make it the highest-ranking university in Scotland and sixth in the UK. Ahead of fair St A was Cambridge (ranked first), followed by Oxford (surprise, surprise), the London School of Economics, Imperial College London and Durham. Piff, piff.

The guide’s calculations are measured by 9 components: Student Satisfaction, Research Assessment, Entry Standards, Student to Staff Ration, Spending on Academic Services, Spending on Student Facilities, Good Honours degrees achieved and finally, Graduate Prospectus and Completion. According to the guide, “What is beyond dispute is that the top 10 includes some of the world’s finest higher education institutions.”

Principal and vice-chancellor Professor Louise Richardson said about the poll, “this result is clear evidence of the dedication, engagement and academic rigour of everyone who works and studies at St Andrews and a signal of our determination to ensure St Andrews and Scotland continue to compete globally at the highest level.”
