Ahead of B-sides’ May Dip special at The Vic on Tuesday night, I caught up with Calum Bryant and Theo Borgvin to find out what they have in store for the May Dip revellers…

So just in a few words, what can we expect on Tuesday?

CB: Good times and B-sides vibes. It’ll be myself, Theo and Sam in both the main bar and the social club.

TW: I’m trying to avoid using the word ‘vibes’ again but it’s too easy. Maybe a ‘St Andrews on Sea’ feel.

CB: Yeah, some ‘beach party’ atmosphere.

TW: The night’s intended basically as a warm up before heading off to the beach, to house parties and various things. Just to get people in the spirit of May Dip and give them somewhere to express themselves.

What genre of music have you got in store?

CB: We’re still deciding, maybe hip-hop in the main bar. Mainly house and deep house verging into techno territory.

TW: Something summery and jazz orientated.

CB: And disco too…

Anything new or special for this particular B-Sides?

CB: We want to create a really summery ambiance.

TW: Maybe some aquatic-themed clothing, Hawaiian shirts perhaps?!

CB: It’ll be a similar set up to past B-sides. Basically good music in 2 rooms until 2am (subject to licensing request).

TW: This is also Sam’s last B-sides before he graduates. He founded it with Matt Gavris so it’s also a celebration of Sam’s founding and contribution to B-sides.

Any favourites tracks or mixes to listen out for on the night?

TW: That’s hard there’s so much good stuff!

CB: Also it really depends on the crowd. We’ll decide our favourites on the night! But for a taster… Quentin Harris ‘Beautiful Black Women Come From Brooklyn (Zed Bias Remix).

What have been your musical highlights of the year?

CB: For me it was probably Midland. It was a lot of work on my part putting it all together. Theo did the graphics for it too. It was nice to do everything in terms of bringing the artist, promoting the night and making it a success.

TW: For me just the fact that it’s consistently a good time. I was playing in the bunker last time. Is that what it’s called? The hive?

CB: The social club….

TW: Yeah, the social club. When it’s full it’s always fun. The Amsterdam-style lighting helps. People are always very enthusiastic and it’s great.

With so much going on for May Dip on Tuesday, why should people come to the Vic?

TW: To get an ‘outside’ St Andrews experience.

CB: For the music.

Will you be doing May Dip this year?

CB: Yes.

TW: Certainly.

Any personal May Dip highlights or experiences?

CB: I’ve actually never made it. So this will be my first time…

TW: The beach and the water. I went to sleep last year which was an error…

So that’s your top tip for surviving May Dip then?

TW: Do not go to sleep. Stay up until 4.

CB: Keep the energy levels up… that’s why we’ve got B-sides.

Calum, Theo and Sam will be at The Vic on Tuesday so get yourself on down. Free entry before 11pm and £3 after. Check out the Facebook event here.
