Everything’s Better in 7s

Saturday, April 20th is going to be a good day. Why, you ask? April 20th is the day of the St Andrews’ Rugby Sevens tournament, one of the most highly anticipated university rugby events of the year, and it’s not just for the rugby players, but for anyone keen to join the fun.

St Andrews has had the pleasure of annually hosting the largest student run Sevens tournament in the UK for 44 years now, and 2013 is bound to rise to the occasion. Sponsored by the local Eden Brewery and several other businesses, the Sevens tournament has received a great deal of attention with the tagline, ‘Everything’s better in sevens’, several catchy (and suggestive) black and white adverts, and a massive after party dubbed ‘Seventh Heaven’ to be held at the Union.

A total of 32 men’s teams fight for the tournament’s champion title and glory.

Not only does the tournament promise an amazing men’s competition, but for the first time in the history of the St Andrews Rugby Sevens, there is also a women’s tournament, consisting of 8 teams. The St Andrews Women’s RFC is enthusiastic and hopes that this year will be a successful platform for future years. They are optimistic that it will soon be as anticipated as the men’s tournament. Even better, the tournament as a whole is not exclusive to University teams, but also includes a range of club teams. The competition will be heavy, and every team will bring a range of skills and talent to the table – a guarantee for an action-packed rugby showdown.

If that’s not enough to pique your interest in the tournament, perhaps the fact that there are usually several popular rugby faces that attend the Sevens event will. Last year the dashing blonde Scotland player, Dave Denton, was spotted watching the matches from the sidelines of the University Park pitch. There were also several well-known sevens teams participating in the tournament itself.

Finally, the best way to close a rugby sevens tournament: the afterparty, sponsored by The Yacht Week. Although there is a change in venue from last year’s Kinkell Byre to the University of  St Andrews’ very own Union, it is still predicted to be just as good – if not better. The party invites all participating rugby teams, spectators, fans and students alike to join in on the post-tourney carnage, and is likely to be a night you won’t remember, but a party you’ll never forget.

So, do you like watching rugby? How about pie? Of course you do, who doesn’t like pie? Do fancy seeing fit, attractive men and women running around in their rugby kit? Or maybe you just want to attend a wild after party? Regardless of where you stand, the St Andrews Rugby Sevens has something for everyone. It’s worth it.
