From shirts to skirts, jewellery to jackets, dresses to denim, furs to figurines, the Vintage Fashion Fair has it all. The most recent fair blared out jazz and swing music from South Street’s Lower Parliament Hall on a wonderfully sunny Saturday. Students and locals filtered in and through the stalls, decked out with unique purchases.

And here’s our exclusive interview with Vintage Fair coordinator, Jasmine Whoolhouse about her experiences with the business and plans for the future.

So Jasmine, the Vintage Fashion Fair has been a huge success within town. What was your inspiration behind the project?

Being totally honest, I think the inspiration came out of boredom. Shopping in St Andrews is very limited – there’s only so many days you can go to Dundee or try find something unique in the smallest H&M in the world – so combined with my love of fashion and all things vintage, the Very Vintage Fashion Fair was born!

How long have you been heading these events?

The Very Vintage Fashion Fair was launched in St Andrews in September 2011, and has been going from strength to strength both here, and across the water in Dundee ever since!

The event this past week seemed like a huge success, how did you think it went?

With the union being redeveloped, it was difficult to find a location in St Andrews big enough for all of our vendors, but Parliament Hall brought in tourists and students alike grabbing the bargains – overall, it was a great success!

What do you think has been the quirkest thing you have seen from one of the vendors?

There are always a few gems hidden at the fair – one of my favourites from this fair was a pair of furry cow-print moccasins – I mean, that’s not even acceptable for fancy dress…

Every single fair seems to bring something new and fresh, is there anything in particular we can expect at the next one?

The Very Vintage Fashion Fair returns to Parliament Hall on April 27th in time for a summer wardrobe revamp with the usual array of vintage goodies. What’s more exciting is what’s happening next year – I can’t give much away, but we will be back in September with one of the biggest vintage events to date!

Not only have you attacked the clothing market, but it seems like you have started a Vintage Night Out. What is that going to be like?

SOULFEVER is our hottest new event! We’re heading down to Ma Bells this Thursday (7th March) from 9:30pm to flaunt our very best vintage and dance the night away to the sounds of the 50s and 60s! We’ve got an amazing DJ coming across the water, who will be playing vintage vinyl right the way through until 1:00am. SOULFEVER is just the starting point for Very Vintage Events – we have so many ideas and it’s time we put them into action. We’re not going to give the game away, but just watch this space..
