St Andrews feminists, both men and women, braved the cold on Wednesday to tell their peers and the world that “I need feminism because…”

After Oxford students’ “I need feminism because…” campaign went viral, St Andrews students David Bunce, Marian Kelsey, Simon Brand, and Rachel Brand organized a similar photoshoot in St Mary’s Quad. Despite having been publicised only on facebook, 118 photos were taken to show that even in our grey medieval town, feminism is alive and kicking.

One of the organizers, Kelsey, said about the event, “It was great to see so many people turning up, especially when they were braving the freezing weather. I like how the photo shoots are a way for people to get involved and have their say in a way which isn’t too intimidating or intense – but which can be part of ordinary life, as equality should be!”

David Bunce was equally as thrilled with the turnout, saying, “We are delighted with how popular this project has been and I think it shows that the language of feminism is still useful for tackling real world issues that men and women in this university experience. We hope that it will provoke conversation and raise awareness.”

The photos taken span the width of the university’s population, including men, women, professors, and even the Saint’s Cheerleading team. Bunce has said that if a minimum of 40 people confirmed “yes” to the next demonstration, they will host another photoshoot.
