On February 23rd, the annual St Andrews Foreign Affairs Society’s conference will hit Parliament Hall, this year focusing on the topic of “Nationalism in the New Era: Scottish Independence and Similar Movements”.

The society has invited four experts from across the UK to discuss the economic, political and social aspects of Scottish independence, as well as the fate of similar nationalist movements across the world.  Tom Mullen, a former House of Commons expert on Scottish Affairs; Montserrat Guibernau, Professor of Politics at Queen Mary University; Michael Keating, professor at both Aberdeen and Edinburgh universities, and David McCrone, Emeritus Professor of Sociology and fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, will be in attendance to discuss various acts of nationalism across history. The talks will heavily feature Scottish independence and its potential effects on economy and society, as well as talks on independence movements throughout history.

The Foreign Affairs Society’s president, Max Baldi, has said; “SAFAC allows students to deepen their appreciation of the critical phenomenon of nationalism, interact with eminent scholars, and network with like-minded peers from other universities. It provides them with a forum for academic discussion of pressing world issues.”
