The bouncers of Studio 54 had little in common with the bouncers of the Lizard. If you weren’t a celebrity or paying for the drug trips of umpteen models, you had to look like a masterpiece to get past their ropes.

So, in an effort to save the student populace from lamely Googling what the maddest club goers of 1978 looked like or ringing Mum and Dad for tips on how to be cool, The Stand did both of those things for you.

If being a (fashion) prude is not for you, tonight is your night. Don’t be afraid to show them what you’ve got out there in plunging necklines, strapless tops and fur. If you have trousers that hit at your natural waist—go for it. Erring on the side of looser fabrics is a good bet. Leave the tiny stilettos at home for when you next feel like impersonating Victoria Beckham in front of the mirror. Tonight, chunkier heels are all the rage.

Manly men: time to amp up the shoulder pads and let your tie make its presence known. Pastels are on trend. Bonus points for over sized shades indoors and why not unbutton that dress shirt of yours when you start to dance real hard? Feel the pleasant breeze of the low ceilings and sweaty people of the Lizard.

For the face, the late 1970s make up started to look scarily modern. The August 1978 British Vogue cover features glossy red lips, deep eggplant (easily swapped for brown) lined eyes, which are highlighted by a lighter eye shadow.

As far as hair goes, leave your ultra-bouncy-feathery Farah Fawcett layers at home, that was so 1976, opt instead for straight or alternatively wavy hair and part it down the middle. Oval faces rejoice. If your hair is short or has a lot of volume, let it be just that.

The lads: try if you can to take hair growth serum, pills, hair plugs or whatever it is that’s the rage these days to turn your nicely clipped hair into a mane. OR you can take a hint from Roger Moore above and all the other James Bonds before and after who favoured short to long no matter what people were doing.

And for all the disco-goers: wear some bling or get real and go home.
