St Andrews will not join the NUS, by a vote of 1,763 to 590, the Election Committee and STAR Radio reported today.

Association President Freddie Fforde commented on the referendum, saying “I think it’s very important to stress that this is a victory for St Andrews students in general, as our turnout at 26% is higher than the average 19% of any NUS referendum in recent times.”

Association Chair Emmanuel Michelakakis congratulated each campaign when he said “It was a remarkably clean campaign, and both teams should be commended for that. St Andrews has always taken pride in its role of representing students and this is validated by the high turnout of students in this referendum.”

2,353 students voted out of a possible 9,289, and the vote was won by almost 50% on the part of the No campaign.
