The university drinking league table has been announced for 2012 and St Andrews students appear to be distinctly average drinkers. St Andrews are 25th in a national poll conducted by studentbeans.com, drinking an average of 20.2 units of alcohol per week since the start of the academic year.

We are drinking an average of 2.89 units of alcohol per day, which is well within the average national daily guidelines for men and women of 3-4 and 2-3 units respectively. This is a surprising statistic, bearing in mind St Andrews is a small place, giving alcohol, shall we say, a rather central role in student social life.

First place in the Alcohol Drinking League 2012 was awarded to Queen’s University, Belfast with an average weekly consumption of 27.3 units. This breaks down to 3.9 units per day. Shockingly, Glasgow University came second last (72nd).

Earlier this year St Andrews beat Oxford in studentbeans’ sex survey, coming in at a cheeky 51.

Minimal levels of drinking protects your liver and dignity, and low levels of sexual partnerships reduces the risk of spreading STIs and undergraduate pregnancy levels. Who’s laughing now, Queen’s?
