So week nine has crept up on us and having a 12 week term with no reading week doesn’t seem like such a good idea anymore… But on the plus side, the Symphony Orchestra have scheduled you a break from the library on Thursday 15th November at 19:30 in Younger Hall. The group, around 70-persons-strong, will play two of the most-loved pieces from the repertoire.

Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, often considered as one of the most technically challenging of all violin concertos, will be played by guest soloist Tamas Fejes, co-leader of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra – not to mention being a former member of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London.

The orchestra will then employ its full force to perform a symphony by Tchaikovsky’s pupil, Rachmaninov. Rach’s 2nd Symphony has been described by one of the orchestra’s performers “packed with big romantic tunes with a high degree of underlying organisation.”

Student violinist Maebh Martin, who leads the orchestra and has just returned from London having performed for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, had this to say: “Performing the works of three major Russian composers, coupled with the opportunity to play a concerto with a violinist of such international standing, makes this concert programme one of the most exhilarating I’ve ever had the privilege of playing.”

Tickets are £4 for students and are available on the door.
