Raisin. One word, a whole lexicon of connotations. Fruit, fear, anxiety, Absolut, memories, madness, tradition. I remember my raisin, albeit vaguely. As I zig-zagged my way through the streets back to halls on that fateful Sunday, one thing pulsed through my mind. I was so horribly over-dressed. My intoxicated self longed for the soft touch of cotton trackies and a warm hoodie; the reassuring comfort of canterburys, hell, I’d even have worn Uggs if they were available. But what was I wearing you ask? Had some eccentric father forced me into a Bullingdon-esque three piece suit? Had Mother dearest decided to test-run some humiliating get-up for the foam fight? Quite the opposite: I was wearing chinos and a chambray shirt, and I had never felt more uncomfortable in my life. I guess what I’m trying to say is dress for comfort. Here’s some inspiration to get that comfortable look with a stylish San Andrean edge.

Shoes

The name of the game is stability. Repeat the mantra to yourself: two legs good, legless bad. Indeed on this day, as you fulfil the wild scavenger hunts your parents set you, the quaint cobbled streets of our fine seaside town will soon become your worst enemy. Go for skate shoes or converse, check out this latest collaboration between Vans and Barbour for a street style look that encapsulates St Andrews.

Guys, keep it simple and classic with this oversized check scarf from British staple, Fred Perry. A beautiful scarf that’s sure to keep those Fife gales at bay.

Coats

A coat may seem like a huge buy for one weekend, but see it as a long-term investment. Winter is coming and it’s going to last. For guys, parkas have suddenly made quite the resurgence, so embrace your inner mod/Antarctica with this quality coat from Penfield.

For the girls, here’s a classic from Tommy Hilfiger. This design is a timeless addition to any wardrobe and will definitely keep you from hypothermia.

Knitwear

When it comes to wrapping up warm, Grandma knows best, so be sure to get on this stylish knitwear. Guys, keep it cheap and simple with this blue dash number from Topman.

For the girls try this bold cardigan from Asos, practical and fashionable, this one’s a winner for raisin.

So there’s some inspiration for a stylish yet comfortable look which is sure to get you through this crazy tradition and spruce up your winter wardrobe. Here’s to one of the best weekends of the year! Stay classy, St Andrews!
