22 year old Florence Barrow has fought off 160 rivals to land the job running a Post Office and gift shop in Port Lockroy, around 11,000 miles away from home. The Modern History graduate will spend her time with no central heating, mains electricity or running water. St Andrews weather has prepared her well to move to a region with the lowest naturally occurring temperatures on earth.

Growing up with stories of her great-great uncle, a geologist on-board the Discovery, Florence has said that it is a ‘dream come true’ to work in Antarctica.  After stocking up on four-months-worth of food, including 12kg of chocolate, Florence will live in the company of three people and around 4000 penguins.

After graduating in July, Florence was aware how tough it was for her classmates to find a job, and knows how lucky she is to have such a unique opportunity. Speaking of her new career, she said, “Working in the Antarctic is a privilege that very few people get to experience and to be there in 2012, the centenary year of Scott’s expedition to the South Pole, will make it even more special.”

It once again shows that St Andrews graduates really do get the coolest jobs in the world.
