Blind date is finally back! For our first installment we sent second year astrophysicist Euan MacDonald, an avid poker player and Aikmans barman, to meet Johannah Alltimes, a fourth year Latinist, film photographer and hip-hop dancer.

Johannah on Euan:

Before the date what were you hoping for?

A laugh, lots of banter, a new friend.

Before the date who were you hoping for?

More like hopes against. I didn’t want anyone who I knew already, and I didn’t want an awkward guy.

First impressions?

I went in for the overly formal handshake and I’m glad I did because he had a good one. Other thoughts that flitted through my mind included: “He’s super tall, yes please!” and “Hel-LO, he has swag.”

What did you talk about?

Everything. Travel, our thoughts on hipsters, what animal we would be, the American elections, etc. We found that we had a lot in common, some of it pretty random, which was amusing.

Any awkward moments? Spill something?

The most awkward moment was when we had to have our photo taken and we were told to stare intimately into each other’s eyes after we’d only been at the table about twenty minutes. I also tried to pour an unopened bottle of wine…

Did your date have good table manners? What was the food like?

He had excellent table manners, I couldn’t fault him. One of my pet hates is people who eat with their mouths open and he did not do that so I was happy. The food was delicious; I loved the fajitas and the cheesecake. Thank you Oak Rooms!

Would you introduce your date to your friends?

Definitely.

Did you go on somewhere..?

We went on and had a drink at The Criterion, and then realized that I had had a little too much wine already, but he was very gracious about it.

Would you see your date again?

Yes, I would.

Did you enjoy yourself? What was the Oak Rooms romantic table like?

I had a wonderful time, he was extremely funny and charming. Cheeky little red rose strategically placed with a candle as well, all very classy.

Rate your evening out of ten.

9/10. Thank you to The Stand for setting it up!

Euan on Johannah:

Before the date what were you hoping for?

A steak, mostly.

Before the date who were you hoping for?

Someone reasonably attractive with some good banter.

First impressions?

Slightly awkward as I was intimated by her fourth year status, but she had a pretty face.

What did you talk about?

We had some intelligent chat on politics, St Andrews and other stuff. I liked how she had an interesting take on some subjects and was a good talker.

Any awkward moments? Spill something?

There was one when Johanna tried to pour me some more wine but awkwardly forgot to take the cap off, hanging the bottle in mid-air for a while…

Did your date have good table manners? What was the food like?

Great table manners, couldn’t quite handle the wine though. I had a steak pie so my mission for the evening was accomplished.

Would you introduce your date to your friends?

Definitely, she holds a good conversation.

Did you go on to somewhere…?

We went on to the Criterion, but I had to finish Johanna’s drinks for her.

Would you see your date again?

Wouldn’t rule out seeing her again.

What was the Oak Rooms romantic table like?

The candles and the roses were a nice touch, but the smirking waiters were a little off-putting. I also was not too pleased when the photographer arrived, I don’t think she got my best side.

The great chat puts it at a solid 8. It was nice to find someone in St Andrews who isn’t so far up their own arse.

Thanks to the Oak Rooms and Ogstons for providing Blind Date’s wonderful meals. If you’d like a lovely evening out set up by The Stand’s very own cupid, email us
