Hello, lovely Stand readers, we hope you’re coping with Freshers Flu and unreasonable 9am lectures. We have been partied out – after two weeks of Bop, Tinchy, Rudimental, StandBack, and more, we’re tired. Therefore, we made the executive decision to make this week’s Top Five a little gentler than usual…

Open Mic Night: The nice fellows over at Inklight are hosting their first Open Mic Night of the semester. If you like putting pen to paper and letting your angst flow, head down to Aikman’s on Monday evening and share your emotions with a chilled crowd of like-minded souls, who will also be opening up their hearts at that Microphone of Truth. Any kind of writing is welcome, just maybe nothing too Fifty Shades.

Union Pub Quiz: The prizes are so good, we don’t even know what they are – we just know they’re ‘fantastic’. If creative writing isn’t your thing, try the Union at 9pm Monday for their weekly Pub Quiz, where your knowledge on anything from Star Trek to French cheese will be tested.  Everybody loves free stuff, so go use your University Challenge intellect to bag yourself some.

Play Shinty: You’ve had a week to recover from Freshers, so it’s time to get down to some exercise and chase away the Fresher 15. Nobody knows more about combining horrible amounts of drinking with hardcore fitness than the Shinty team, whose training has been rumoured to consist of running from the pitch to the nearest pub, downing a pint and running back. They’re a friendly bunch so turn up on Wednesday, 2pm (on the Shinty pitch). Protective gear advised.

Go Surfing: If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to get fitter, be more productive or just generally do cool stuff, then this is for you. Maurice Bryson has set up his own surf school, Oceanics St Andrews, and boy, does he give a great lesson. Get a group of friends together and head to the beach to tear it up. Stop surfing the net and start surfing those North Sea waves.

Itchy Feet: So you’ve relaxed and recouped; by Thursday night you will be rested enough to jump right back on those messibombs – just in time for the return of one of the biggest hits of last semester. The travelling funk party that is Itchy Feet is back in Venue 1 from 10pm until late, giving you ample opportunity to get down and groovy. They love their golden oldies, playing the ultimate in dance floor fillers, rock n’ roll, funk, soul, swing, blues and more. Don’t miss this one – you will regret it.
