Undercover Fresher: Under-cover(s) after Freshers’ Week

My body is dead and my life savings have been depleted. I never want to leave the warm comfort of my bed again. This is what Freshers’ Week has done to me.

It has been nine days of parties, activities, and welcomes to St Andrews. After all that, I’m glad that I finally have the excuse of a 9 o’clock lecture to stay in at night.

On Sunday morning I braved the craziness of Freshers’ Fayre. After affixing my name to at least fifteen society mailing lists, I made my way down to the Pier Walk. Walking amongst the masses of red gowns along the pier reminded me why I came here in the first place.

Seeking an epic finale to Freshers’ Week, I went to watch Tinchy Stryder in action. Instead, I waited for over two hours to hear one song and listen to a broken speaker system. I was disappointed so I left early to shouts of “Tinchy is a wanker,” echoing behind me.

Now that the week is finally over, I’m all for holing up in my room surrounded by pints of Ben & Jerry’s to recover. Unfortunately, seeing as I’m at uni to learn, that isn’t the most practical plan.

In an attempt to adjust to ‘normal’ life in The Bubble, I’ve been trying to get into some sort of routine. Seeking some sort of normality, I’ve taken to the gym every day.

Attempting to work off a fraction of the alcohol that I consumed last week, I’ve been eating healthy as well. Call me crazy, but I’m determined to heed India Doyle’s advice and avoid that unforgiving Freshman Fifteen.

Coughing up a storm during my lectures (and receiving plenty of glares in return), I’ve managed to get through my first week of lectures relatively unscathed. We’ll see how everything goes as the real work sets in.

For now, the excitement and newness of Freshers’ Week has died down. Not going out every night seems strange, but it’s a nice contrast to the craziness of the first week in St Andrews.

Even though Freshers’ Week is over, don’t miss me too much. I’ll be back throughout the year, experiencing my first year at St Andrews alongside the rest of you.
