The few Freshers who had managed to brave the final event of Freshers’ Week were appalled by a less than booming performance. During the second track of Tinchy Stryder’s set, there was a significant loss of audio and it suddenly sounded as if one was stood listening from outside the Union, as opposed to from in front of its mammoth speakers.

Raging Freshers started booing, spurring on the sound team to attempt to fix the problem. One technician told The Stand that Tinchy’s own ‘sound entourage’ had blown the speakers during a rehearsal earlier that day and that the sound company the Union had hired to resolve the issue was now failing to do so.

Unfortunately for Director of Services, Jules, and his hard-working volunteer sound crew, Tinchy, after a 30 minute wait to get the sound system going again, came on stage ordering the crowd to shout ‘fuck you’ at whoever was responsible for the embarrassment. (We think you’ll find that was your peeps to start off with, Tinch).

But Fresher’s Flu/Fatigue had taken its toll on numbers in Venue 1, which had diminished significantly in that half an hour – not to mention the hordes of people who had already given up on the show during the two hours it had taken the artist to turn up. The evening ended up being an intimate gig: an internationally renowned rap-artist (can we get a round of applause to Jules for managing that, please?) doing a performance punctuated not only by a loss of volume, but also by Tinchy’s incessant ‘conversation’ with his audience between every song. One 3rd-year commented, ‘it’s quite revealing that Tinchy’s music relies so heavily on massive amplification… Without it, it just seems naff.’

Well done to Jules and the rest of our Sabbs for an awesome Freshers Week packed with rockin’ events and prestigious acts. We’re just sorry Tinchy was such a Diva.
