This year’s Freshers’ debate featured high profile speakers such as Bill Leckie of The Sun, the deputy editor of the Scotsman, and The Stand’s very own Editor-in-Chief, Lauren Hepburn. After a close show of hands, the St Andrews Union Debating Society voted 83 to 62 against “sell[ing] its scandals to The Sun”.

The debate featured some well-mannered jeers directed towards The Sun, excellent speeches from the floor, and the full-monty of traditions that make the UDS so famous.

According to many of those who attended, the highlight of the night was Miss Hepburn’s speech. She passionately argued that the audience should pass a motion that allows people to vent frustration on celebrities and people they don’t know (as opposed to friends and family). More importantly, she implored St Andrews to, ‘behave badly, take pictures of it and send them to The Stand – tomorrow.’ One fan called her speech, “deeply moving”, another, “pee-your-pants funny”.

So you don’t want to sell your scandals to The Sun, St Andrews? Give them to us instead.
