St Andrews: Top of the Scots

According toThe Guardian‘s University league table, published online this week, St Andrews is Top Dog in Scotland. Placing us in 4^th place in the UK, we are the only Scottish university to make it into the top 10.

Excluding LSE and Glasgow Universities, every public university in The Guardian’s top 20 is set to charge the new maximum fee of £9,000 for undergraduates starting in September.

The guide records the performance of universities across all main subject areas and gave St Andrews a first-place slot for its School of Religious Studies and Theology. Computer Science & IT, Mathematics and Politics were ranked second in the UK, while History, History of Art and Physics, and Chemistry, Classics and Philosophy took third and fourth places.

Despite being overtaken by one place this year, St Andrews continues to sit confidently behind Cambridge, Oxford and LSE. It can boast a top five position for student expenditure (really?), wonderful career prospects (though there may be a few soaked people who’d say, ‘really?’), high entry grades (I’ll say), extreme student satisfaction (obviously) and some outstanding teaching. And here’s the cherry on the cake: we are first in the UK for ‘value added’, a measurement which marks academic improvement between being a drunken Fresher and a sober entry into the real world four years later… GO ST ANDREWS.
