As we all sit in remorse of our holiday and intersemester bingeing, conversations with politically-incorrect relatives, lack of revision, exam marks and perhaps over-zealous new years resolutions – I turn to the positive leftovers of the holiday season (and no, I’m not talking food here).  While it has come to an end, the holiday season can also set an example for a continued spirit of giving, despite the undeniable joy it brings me to write up an unending ‘wish list’ for the North Pole (Yes, I still have to address it to Santa). Whether it’s the satisfaction of giving the perfect gift, the jolly charity bell ringers, carollers, or any number of holiday traditions that herald philanthropy, all mark the true nature of the holiday spirit.  As I nurse my holiday hangover and attempt to implement my many resolutions, I reflect on how I can carry this tradition with me into the New Year and new semester.  Luckily for me, I already have the perfect opportunity awaiting me at St Andrews: The Charity Runners Society!

Everyone is bombarded the plethora of ‘Justgiving’ pleas from friends near and far, sponsoring deserving organizations. If you are the type who gets jealous watching the donations accumulate on your athletic and proactive friend’s flashy website, then this society offers you a way to get in on the action! If you prefer to cheer on these crazier folk, then you can help support your fellow student philanthropists and friends with the click of a few buttons! If you’re looking for a society that you can convince to sponsor “that awesome, tiny charity you worked with on your gap year” – look no further.

The Charity Runners are calling for all returning St Andrews students! Kickstart your mornings with a group run; join in our races (free t-shirts abound); sustain your charity throughout the year, and follow-up on our pleas for a few pounds.  In short, look us up!  What better way, in the Year of the Dragon, of “dominance and ambition”, to kickstart and keep your many or few resolutions?

So, join the Charity Runners Society. No matter how you decide to get involved, it’ll be a step in the right direction!

Happy New Year and New Semester!
