Soton classes and exams have moved online for the rest of the year

University of Southampton classes and exams have moved online for the rest of the year, an email has just confirmed.

The email, sent to all students by the University’s Vice-President for education, says three decisions have been made in light of the latest advice concerning coronavirus:

1. All teaching for the rest of the academic year will be online, not face-to-face.

2. All assessments “can be undertaken off-campus and indeed outside the UK”, rather than on campus. Changes made by other UK universities include moving exams online, or setting additional coursework in place of exams.

3. University Halls and “key services” like Hartley Library are remaining open, for now.

The move comes after on Friday the University announced it was bringing Easter break forward by a week. There has been no teaching this week. Graduation has been postponed and Varsity was cancelled.

Dear Student,

All Undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught students

The University has made the following positive decisions in light of the latest advice concerning Covid-19:

1) All teaching and academic support for the remainder of this academic year will be delivered online. There will be no teaching activity for the remainder of this academic year that will require you to be on campus.

2) All programmes being offered during this current academic year will have forms of assessment that can be undertaken off-campus and indeed outside the UK. There will be no assessment tasks for the remainder of this academic year that will require you to be on campus.

3) University accommodation and key academic services such as the Hartley Library will remain open until further notice.

We hope that this provides you with the information you need to decide whether to stay in Southampton to study or to continue your studies from elsewhere through online-enabled distance learning, support and assessment.

We appreciate and share the concerns you are experiencing about the current situation with Covid-19. We are working very hard to ensure that the University is able to continue to offer the high-quality education and student support that you expect from us and will endeavour to resume teaching (online) at the end of the Easter Vacation, as planned.  We appreciate your patience during this difficult time.
