A 20-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in the early hours of Sunday morning between Asda supermarket and a car park on Portland Terrace in the City Centre.

A police spokesperson told BBC News Hampshire that "specialist officers were supporting the woman, and regular patrols were being carried out."

They added: "We would like to remind people to remain vigilant, especially when walking alone in the dark."

BBC Radio Solent also commented on the incident yesterday morning: "Police in Southampton are reminding people to take care when walking at night – following a report of a serious sexual assault on a 20-year-old woman in the city centre near Asda early yesterday morning".

There has been no further information. Many students will find this news distressing as the area of the attack is a popular student location and one often used at night, when travelling to and from clubs.
