Eight teams of firefighters called to tackle large fire at Southampton Docks

It broke out just before 2:00pm last Thursday

A large fire is reported to have broken out on a cargo ship at 13:51 last Thursday afternoon. Over 35 firefighters from eight stations across Hampshire were called to help battle the flames.

The fire service has confirmed that there have been no injuries as a result of the blaze, and everyone on board the ship has been accounted for. The boat is currently dry docked at the Western Dock, and people living or working nearby have been advised by the Fire Department to keep their doors and windows shut, to avoid unnecessary smoke inhalation.

According to ITV news, the ship is carrying 28,000 tonnes of scrap metal. The cause of the fire is reported to be due to a reaction of the metals onboard, affecting 7,000 tonnes of the load. For regular updates, follow Hampshire Fire Control on Twitter.
