50 university areas are included in the results

A recent study of 50 university areas conducted by marbles.com has found Southampton the 17th most expensive town for university students. By comparison; Oxford placed 19th and Keele was found to be the cheapest university town.

The table released by Marbles highlights the average prices of weekly rent, travel passes, weekly gym membership, cinema tickets as well as a pint and a kebab (a classic student dish). For the Southampton, the prices are as followed:

* Weekly Rent = £158.00
* Travel Pass = £56.00
* Gym Membership = £12.90
* Cinema Ticket = £9.25
* Pint = £3.50
* Kebab = £5.10

Living Luxury: Southampton Halls are amongst the most expensive in the country

For weekly rent Southampton is one of the highest in the country, with only 8 university areas ranking higher than the £158 clocked in by Southampton. Considering the study counted multiple areas of London as separate university towns – making Southampton the most expensive non-London area for weekly rent.

In fact, if you condensed all the individual London areas included in the study into one single table entry, Southampton would move much higher up the cost ladder. Instead of being 17th out of 50 towns, Southampton would be 9th out of 42 entries. For the full table released by marbles.com you can click here or the link at the top of this article
