The Great British Bake Off has been working its way into daily routines up and down the country. The show sees eleven amateur bakers and one who is secretly a professional participate in an aggressive, pastry-based brawl, loosely disguised as a baking competition.
Quintessentially British and lavish with scandal, it has attracted a kind of cult following, so it’s no surprise that the punters at BBC have drafted in Southampton University’s very own Cake Decorating Society to take part in ‘Extra Slice,’ the show on the side for those of us who just can’t get enough. Soton Tab caught up with them for the details.
Congratulations guys! So when is the show?
We are still in the process of sorting this out, but GBBO have said either at the end of this month or next. So it will be soon!
Could you tell us who will actually be appearing?
• Alice Chant, 3rd Year Nursing
• Hayley Short, History Masters
• Shaheer Khan, 2nd Year Geography
• Becca Sherman, 3rd Year Nursing
• Lucy-Anne Taylor, 3rd Year Archaeology and History
• Erin Blandford, 2nd Year Biology
• Lexia Masse, 2nd Year zoology student
• Rosie Guy, 3rd Year Archaeology and History
It will be most of the committee and also other members and student that may show an interest. You just need to have the right enthusiasm and be a cake and decorating lover.
What was it that made them pick you guys out as the people to come on?
‘Extra Slice’ is always looking for enthusiastic cake bakers and decorators. Our society is pretty unique – not many other Cake Decorating societies exist
Out of the judges who is your favourite one and which contestant are you backing to win this year’s edition?
Our favourite judge is Mary, She’s just so fab. She gives good constructive criticism and useful advice, also her recipes work really well! Although Paul is great too, plus he has a rare mischievous smile. We’re not surewhich contestant we are backing to win this year. It’s only been 2 episodes and all of them seem great!
What was your own inspiration for getting involved in the society?
Most of us started off coming along to the sessions, and meeting who have the same passion whilst decorating loads of different cupcakes. All the sessions have a different theme, from Valentines and Halloween to Dogs and Animal and Boobs and Bra’s, where we support different charities and help raise money and awareness. Its loads of fun and is really just a casual way of doing something different, at university. But most of all of, everything to do with the society is delicious!
So there we have it – if you weren’t drooling to watch Extra Slice beforehand then you ought to be now. Plus it’s hosted by the cranky old woman that used to be in Have I Got News For You, so with a bit of luck you can have your fill of sugar-based lunacy without Mary Berry sucking your soul out whilst the geezer with really blue eyes hits on the youngest female contestant. Good luck to everyone appearing on the show from us at the Tab. Keep baking! Or whatever it is they say.
