Today is ‘Blue Monday’, pegged by some as the most depressing day of the year. Our Christmas spirit has evaporated, the weather is cold and miserable, and we wish it was socially acceptable to hibernate until spring.

Panic not. The Soton Tab is here to save the day, reminding you that it’s not all doom and gloom, and that there are reasons to be positive for Southampton students.

1. Jesters Monday

How could this not be our first reason? For those of you fortunate enough to be finished with exams and coursework, Jesters can drive away the blues with 50p pints and shots. It simply is not possible to be sad whilst drunkenly singing along to Disney songs or sipping a refreshing Jesticle, so cheer up and get out.

2. Exams are (nearly) over!

Smell that? That’s the smell of freedom on the horizon. Some of you may already be revelling in your free time, hard earned after churning out coursework and revision during Red Bull fuelled library marathons. For those of you with exams this week, it’s almost over. Concentrate on that thought to get you through the day, we’re praying for you.

3. The Library rush is no more

The keener members of First Year have realised the error of their ways and gone back to bed. Those finished with exams have done the same, so further consolation for those of us still battling on is that Hartley is quieter and emptier. Given number two and now this, if you have exams why are you even reading this? Get to the library and revise, no excuses anymore.

4. Tomorrow is Two-For-Tuesday

Pizza is a staple student food, and there is no pizza more delicious than a Dominos. The student budget rarely stretches to such lofty heights, so when a Buy-One-Get-One-Free is given to us, we must seize it with both hands. Both greasy, tomato sauce-covered hands.

5. Our favourite TV shows are here

Whether you’re into drama, comedy or mind-numbing rubbish, there’s something for you on TV at the moment. Cult hit Broadchurch is back on our screens, alongside guilty pleasure Take Me Out, the quirky Brooklyn Nine Nine, and the simply awful Celebrity Big Brother. Combined with the infinite number of shows available online, you have no reason to leave the house. Grab a laptop or a TV, make a cup of tea, and bask in the procrastinationy goodness.

6. Union Films are showing Mean Girls tomorrow (FOR FREE)

Who needs Blue Mondays when you can wear pink on Wednesdays? Our very own cinema is showing the timeless classic Mean Girls tomorrow, and it won’t cost you a penny. Say ‘Boo you whore’ to winter depression, and go laugh with Regina and co.

7. You’re at a bloody good uni

Well done you. Check this out.

There you have it, just seven of an infinite number of reasons why you shouldn’t be feeling blue today. Despite the cold, the exams and the student problems, there are plenty of things to be thankful for this Monday.
