Six fire engines, six police cars and four ambulances are currently on the scene.
It is said to be a house of multiple occupancy. A resident said:
We’re packed in like sardines. It was inevitable that this was going to happen.
Firefighters are currently in the process of evacuating residents from the premises.

A policeman said:
We received a call for a domestic fire with people on premises 31 minutes ago and when this happens this requires a major despatch of units ensuring the safety of the residents.
Portswood Road has been closed off from Lodge Road to Avenue Road while the fire is being dealt with.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
