A non-student was arrested on campus grounds last night after an attempted theft.

The young male was caught trying to steal from the money loaders in Hartey Library at around 7:45pm.

He was apprehended and detained by University security before being arrested by the police.

The suspect was seen running from the library at speed, whilst being pursued by security staff.

He ran towards the interchange, before slipping over in the lavender bushes, where he was detained.

Paul Collins, one of Southampton University’s Security Managers, said:

The man ran for the bushes and fell over. After a bit of a tussle he was detained by security.”

According to Collins, there is speculation that the suspect was armed with a knife. This rumour, however, is yet to be confirmed by police.

One student who witnessed the arrest said:

The guy was chased by Soton security by the bus station and he fell over in the lavender bed! Then the security guys got him and held him down. He was shouting for them to get off and fighting them away, claiming that he couldn’t breathe!”

Police are in the process of investigation.
