Drinking NekNominate RAG RAKnominate

By the looks of things, NekNominate is set to join the long list of done-and-dusted internet crazes such as gallon smashing, planking and cat breading (which I plan to resurrect ASAP). But, as with all social media crazes, something else must take over in its place.

Enter RAKNominate. This new craze refers to performing ‘random acts of kindness’, and, in keeping with its predecessor’s format, making a video and nominating others to perform a similar act.

Believe it or not, even watching people down goldfish or engine oil gets boring.

The acts performed within these videos are of a totally different nature and seem to be taking over the limelight.

These random acts of kindness are not particularly outstanding, nor shocking, but they show that in the time taken to down a pint, you could have performed a small act of kindness, which could have a longer lasting effect, and undoubtedly, a more positive one.

The videos show people, mostly anonymously, doing small things that aim to help someone else in a big way. Acts such as giving food to homeless people, donating blood, or sending anonymous letters have proved popular so far, but I assume these acts will become larger and more outstanding as this new fad gains momentum.

These RAKNominate videos are certainly gaining popularity here in Southampton, with the University’s RAG group beginning a chain of random acts of kindness. This rise in awareness for performing small acts falls conveniently during the RAK Week, an international movement encouraging people to perform a random act of kindness during the 10th-16th February 2014.

So, whether you jumped on the NekNominate bandwagon or not, RAKNominate is something anyone can get involved in, giving you an opportunity to spread the joy – but most importantly, gives you a ‘get out of jail free’ card when it comes to downing whatever unholy substances might be lurking in your student house.
