New site ratemash.com has accessed Facebook photos of students across the country for people to ‘rate’ on hotness, it was revealed today.

The site has put up photos from students’ Facebook profiles against their knowledge, allowing other students and even members of the public to choose a university and browse through girls and guys there, rating each photo on looks. There are also leaderboards of who has been rated the ‘hottest’ for each gender.

The site, whose tagline is ‘you’ll love it – trust me!’, aims to ‘make it easier to meet new people in universities’; its founder Michael Healy told the Huffington Post that he sees the site as a ‘less creepy’ version of dating app Tinder.

Southampton student Alex, who was featured on the guys’ leaderboard for Southampton Uni, told the Soton Tab:

It’s a massive invasion of privacy. I didn’t choose to be on it so I think it’s a bit too outrageous.

Another Southampton student who featured on the girls’ leaderboard told us:

It feels very odd. The thought that somebody has gone to the trouble of voting for me makes me feel rather uncomfortable – I can’t imagine who would have done it, or who would want to waste their time doing it! It’s degrading for anyone, especially those in a relationship and actually quite upsetting to be labelled in such a way.
