First Team: After being relegated from the premiership, after a tough season last year, this first match at home against Royal Agricultural College was highly anticipated. Captained by Eli Birch and Izzie McDowall, a tough pre-season seems to have paid off as the team ran circles around the opposition. The attacking game was on point with fast breaks, well timed cuts and a fluidity of movement in attack that the team were keen to implement this season. Winning or gaining advantage from over 90% of the draws meant that the goal rate was rapid throughout with a final goal count of 21-4. The ball hardly reached the defence but when it did it was met with the might of the promising new goalie, Katie Lightowler The lacrosse fresher’s selected for the team played with great heart and skill showing promise and emphasising the huge potential the team has this season. All in all the team rose to the challenge beginning their campaign to reclaim their spot in premiership with a bang.
Second Team: Entering only their second season in BUCS the Southampton University Ladies Lacrosse second team was keen to show much they learnt last season. Captained by Beth Curtis and Jenny Nunn, the first game against UWE 2nds demonstrated the tenacity of the team as they showed off the result of a tough pre-season and fitness schedule combined with excellent teamwork to result in an emphatic victory. Defensively the team was superb, only conceding one goal throughout the match. They showed great skill forming a tight defence formation that they were keen to work on this season. Many thanks to Laura, a beginner, for stepping into goal and playing an amazing game. The attacking game was also on form with a massive 18 goals scored leaving the final score at 18-1. A big thank you to the three freshers joining us in the match, they all played so well and did not look or feel out of place with our more experienced members. It was a promising game, giving our girls great experience and we look forward to the coming season and more wins for the club.
All in all SULLC are once more dominating Wessex Wednesdays and showing the tremendous skill and promise that this ever growing club has.
