Glen Eyre freshers will be on tenterhooks today as Southampton City Council will decide whether to grant an alcohol licence to the Shell petrol station on Burgess Road.

The licence applied for would allow the sale of alcohol between 7:30am (now there’s a challenge) and 10pm.

This would be a huge fillip to the 2,500 residents living at the Glen and Chamberlain complex, who currently have to walk all the way to the Co-op or Sainsbury’s Local to stock up before a night out.

However, police have raised objections to the licence application, possibly with good reason given recent ire in the local press over the way drinks are marketed to students.

Could this proposal turn Glen Eyre Road into a gin-soaked hellhole?  Have your say below!
