Shortly following the news that there will no longer be a Morrisons M in Portswood, we can now reveal that the Co-Op is closing down.

The store, located on 247 Portswood Road, will close on July 24th due to poor trading performance.

A Co-Op spokesperson told the Soton Tab:

Staff at the store have been informed of the decision, which has been taken with the greatest reluctance and is due to the store’s poor trading performance. It is not, in any way, a reflection on the commitment and hard work of the store team.

Every effort will be made to redeploy as many as possible of the three full-time and 12 part-time members of staff from the food store with The Co-operative, or to help them find alternative employment.

It has not yet been confirmed what will take over the site.

The giant Sainsbury’s store has been in Portswood for just over a year now, could its presence be the cause of the Co-Op’s demise?
