Last night’s Grad Ball turned sour after headline act Example failed to perform.

Despite thousands of final year students keen to see the singer perform, he pulled out an hour before his set. Example said on twitter that his voice was “sounding like sandpaper” and that it “just packed up”.

We tweeted the headliner last night and he had this to say:

Sam Ling, Union President, was as disappointed as everyone that Example did not perform and said:

At 11pm we were contacted an informed that Example would not be performing due to illness. With an hour to go until the performance, our staff pulled out all the stops to ensure we had a fitting act to perform at the peak of the night. We managed to pull together a DJ Fresh and Fleur ‘love’ collaboration, with both artists performing individually at the ball performing together really put on something special.

Students paid £49 for a ticket as well as forking out for drinks, so regarding a form of compensation, Sam Ling also said:

We are currently determining the savings made from Example not performing, and the aim is that we put that right back into the students who attended the ball.

We’re looking into a range of options, including the possibility of running a series of events across graduation week for all those students attending the ball.

A final year student who attended the ball clearly wasn’t fussed about Example. She said:

What Example thing?! I don’t remember leaving predrinks…

There have been mixed opinions of the night but overall the other acts, featuring Scott Mills, Soton alumni Chris Stark, Pendulum, DJ Fresh, Fleur, Amelia Lily, Stavros Flatley and a fun fair, were enjoyed by the hundreds of students in Oceana.

More details to follow.
