A leaking gas cylinder forced Portswood residents to be evacuated early on Saturday morning.

In the early hours of Saturday a leaking propane gas cylinder was found in Portswood Park, causing Portswood Road to be closed between Lodge Road and Spring Crescent and local residents to be evacuated.

Three fire crews from St Mary’s, police and a specialist hazardous material unit from Redbridge were called to the scene at 1am. The situation was secured and dealt with very quickly. Residents were shortly after allowed back to their homes.

Second year history student and Portswood resident, David Gunns, was on his way back from a night out and said:

I saw two fire engines plus police cars and a small crowd gathered. It seemed like a pretty big incident

The propane gas cylinder was found behind a property in the street but it is not yet known what caused the leak.
