Zumba has taken the world by storm! Millions of people across the globe take part- having fun and keeping fit at the same time. If you’ve ever been down near the Cube on a Wednesday afternoon you will have seen that we too here at Southampton have been caught by the Zumba bug! We spoke to Zumba+ Society President Alice Caffull to find out why it is so popular.

1)     So, what exactly does your society do?

Zumba+ Society runs Zumba classes available to anyone at Southampton University on Wednesdays 2-3pm. We only have one class at the moment as we are a new society this year but we are still hugely popular with an average of 60 people per week and we are definitely increasing the number of classes we have next year and also introducing Bokwa classes too. Bokwa is a new dance craze that is set to take the world by storm, similarly to how Zumba did just a few years ago. It doesn’t involve choreography or counting steps so is great for everyone. You just draw letters and numbers with your feet. It sounds crazy but it’s so good; you only have to try it once to fall in love with it! Check it out! (Anna in the video is our instructor – she is amazing!) But at the moment we just do Zumba and it’s great!

2)      Why did you decide to set up the society?

I had always wanted to be involved in a society but hadn’t really put myself forward for much in first year. In second year I realised we didn’t have a Zumba society and thought it would be a good idea to set one up, but I didn’t get round to it. In the summer at the end of second year I thought, this will be my last chance! So I gathered a few interested friends together and decided to set it up. The information about the society spread simply through word of mouth and the first week we had 70 people. It was incredible! And the numbers haven’t really dwindled at all. We have some regulars but most weeks we have new people too.

3) What’s the best thing about your society?

The best thing is meeting new people through this great exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise because it is so fun! Every week everyone leaves smiling and it’s just so much fun but really good exercise too!

4) What’s the most fun social your society has had and why?

We had a ‘tight and bright’ Zumba social which was great, where we all wore bright sporty clothes and had a fun time jumping around and showing Jesters our Zumba moves!

5) Does your society have any weird traditions or stories?

We don’t really have any traditions as of yet but I’m sure we will get some next year!

6) What are you doing at the moment?

I have just handed in my dissertation so I am relaxing in the sun 🙂

7) Jesters or sobar?

Gotta be Jesters I think!

If you’re interested in joining in with Zumba+ they have classes in the Cube 2-3PM every Wednesday
