Run out of good songs to listen to? Wondering who the new up and coming artists are for 2013? Today, Twitter has released a new music app that gives you recommendations for songs based on who you follow, and what is trending across the world.

#music uses information from your Twitter account to direct you to artists and songs that you might like, and then gives you the opportunity to preview the track and then listen in full on sites such as iTunes, Spotify or Rdio.

Essentially, Twitter has done all the leg work for you – it provides you with lists of the most popular tracks trending, as well as suggestions for who to listen to and who your followers are listening to. Much like Spotify’s link to Facebook, what you’re listening to can be tweeted so your followers can see.

You might just surprise yourself by discovering something or someone new..

It is fantastic publicity for artists who are on Twitter; you can tap on their avatars to see their most popular track, follow them instantly, or simply tap their username to go to their profile and learn more about them. Not only that, but if you were searching for a particular artist or song, Twitter will give you recommendations for similar artists or songs as well. On their blog post, Twitter said that artists come on Twitter to be connected to their fans quickly and easily, and that is why they wanted to create an app to find out what people were listening to.

Having only been released today, #music is already popular, with several artists tweeting their support for the app; artists were given access a week early to explore the app before it was released to the public today:

However, I predict that there will be many complaining about this new app for a number of reasons: you still need a Premium Spotify subscription to listen to full tracks, the Spotify link doesn’t even work yet, you can’t get it on any device other than iOS for now, and I’m sure not everyone wants their Twitter being bombarded with #nowplaying suggestions from ‘certain artists’.

Our very own Luke O’Brien had this to say, even though he can’t spell Bieber…

What do you make of #music? Useful resource for finding new music, or annoying inconvenience? Is it a new app or just a rip off of Spotify or other music sharing apps?
