Last night, parts of Highfield Campus, including the Student Services building and half of Hartley Library were evacuated following the discovery of a “suspicious” item.

University Security quickly responded to the potential breach of Building 34 which houses the School of Education and common learning spaces. The Police, Fire and Rescue service and Ambulance crew were all in attendance for over an hour.

The breach turned out to be an empty briefcase which was discovered in the basement, and has now been taken as evidence by the police.

A cordon of 100 metres was established around the building and staff and students in the Hartley Library were moved from all rooms overlooking the building.

The University have issued the following statement:

The University would like to express its thanks to the Hampshire Constabulary, Hampshire Fire and Rescue and South Central Ambulance for their support and assistance. The University would also like to thank all staff and students affected by the incident for their patience and cooperation.
