This political WhatSoc features David Mendoza-Wolfson, Chairman of the Southampton University Conservative Association (SUCA).

So, what exactly does your society do? Give us a quick summary.

We’re there to encourage people to get involved in politics, with the hope that they’ll decide they’re conservative. We have lots of events and get a lot of MPs in to speak. We also do a trip to Parliament, although that’s gone a bit haywire this year because of bad communications. We also try to help, which is why you’ll often find us doing charity events. I think all people in politics want to help people, so I try to make sure SUCA pulls our weight in helping society.

What’s the best thing about your society?

Couldn’t say one best thing! I love how many events we’re able to put on and it’s always great seeing new people come and want to question an MP. I also love our charity events, already this year we’ve raised almost £200 for a homeless charity and it’s great being part of a society that gets people involved in politics and with helping their society.

What’s the most fun you’ve had and why?

Parliament trip in first year probably, it was a really good fun day, and we had loads of new faces.

Does your society have any weird traditions or stories?

Unfortunately, I don’t think we do…I’d love to have some sort of Debate Off against the Labour Club once a year though…maybe that’s a tradition we can get started!

What are you doing at the moment?

Trying to plan our Parliament trip still, I’m hoping that we can still put something on even if it’s small. We’re also planning our big sleeping rough event. We hope to get 20-odd people sleeping out for 2 nights on the campus for the Society of St James. We also have a couple of speakers coming down, so that should be great fun. Not much to campaign at the moment, but we’re doing plenty of other things. I also feel like Political associations at University shouldn’t just be about campaigning, but getting people involved. I don’t care if someone is a Tory, it’s always great to hear someone’s thoughts and have them come to our events.

Jesters or Sobar?

Personally, I’m ambivalent but I know that lots of my committee love Sobar.

Wessex Scene or Soton Tab?

I’m an editor at the Wessex Scene! 😛
