Areas of Southampton have been left with a horrible stench in the air after a gas leak from a factory this morning in France.

Our recommended form of protection from the stench

A large amount of mercaptan gas has accidentally leaked from a factory in Rouen this morning, causing Hampshire to smell like sulphur.

Other areas of the South coast such as Sussex, Kent and Surrey have also experienced the smell.

A 3rd year student told The Tab:

At first I thought I had a gas leak, but then I realised that the smell was coming from outside, so I felt pretty stupid for panicking! It smelled like being in a petrol station.

…whilst another student said:

I haven’t noticed anything. Southampton always smells disgusting.

Meanwhile, in France, a football match expecting 10,000 spectators has been cancelled due to the gas cloud.

The gas mercaptan is used for its overwhelming whiff to add an odour to the more dangerous mains gas – so that people know when there is a leak.

People in the Paris area have reported ‘headaches’ and ‘feeling nauseous’ – despite the French authorities stating that the leak does not pose health risks.
