The Tab has learnt that Southampton student, James Atherton, 25, died in the early hours on Monday morning following a fatal car collision.

James is seen here on the right with SURC member Tom Key

James was a keen rider for Southampton University Road Cycling club (SURC) he competed for the University last year riding at the BUCS road race and criterium. James was on a training ride in the New Forest when the tragedy struck.

He was airlifted to Southampton General, but tragically died from his injuries the following morning.

SURC sent a message informing all members, stating:

James was a bright, energetic person with a fabulous sense of humour. A true ‘Lancashire lad’ with a passion for hard bicycle racing, and possibly even tougher training rides. Just this Saturday, he was racing with SURC riders in apocalyptic weather conditions in Wiltshire, conditions he thrived in, and was enjoying every minute.

His friends have already begun leaving messages in his memory, including his good friend Adel Tyson-Bloor, who described James as:

“instantly likeable and this made him very popular with anyone who crossed his path. He was kind and considerate and showed genuine interest in others”

The car involved in the accident was a grey Volkswagen Golf, travelling towards Brockenhurst. The driver was unhurt.

From everyone at The Tab, we’d like to send our condolences to all of his friends and family.
