Despite a recent surge in form, Southampton have failed to make the grade for the elite tier of British … academia … for next season.

The new 2013 edition of the Guardian university league table sees Southampton languishing in 22nd place overall, behind eleven other Russell Group unis who made the coveted top twenty.  This comes despite a six-position improvement on last year’s result and a five-figure pay rise for our Vice-Chancellor.  Spare a thought for “the other place”, however—Solent came fourth from bottom.

Competition between universities is expected to hot up from next year as the new fee system tricks students into thinking they will have to pay “more” for their degree.

The subject tables are not yet published, but champagne will be on ice in modern languages, ECS (hopefully a safe distance away from their newest toy) and most of the engineering departments as they hope to retain a glut of top ten rankings from last year.  So if you spot your lecturer out this week wearing a tiger onesie and a fetching traffic cone, please don’t hesitate to tweet us the pic…
