The Tab has learned that the University of Southampton will be completely without IT for a whole WEEK in January.

The servers live in the maths tower

From the third to the seventh of January next year iSolutions are upgrading the power cables to the university servers. This means that there will be no access to SUSSED, Blackboard, emails and many other services that we students depend upon.

Academic staff and students are in uproar of the decision to schedule this downtime at such a critical time. The week before term starts marks the time for many of us that revision truly starts and being without any University resources will be a huge blow to our revision plans.

Vice President for Academic Affairs, Sasha Watson, says

The timing, from a student perspective could hardly have been worse – the week in question is a key week for revision and finalising assessment projects. I’m working with all the student representatives on finding the least worst solution. I will also be have big discussions on the future timeliness of such work – as this will have to happen again in a few years time. For now though – download everything you need, and get into the good habit of doing it now

The University is yet to comment.
