A fire broke out on the top floor of a property on Westridge Road around 1330 today (Saturday 4th June)

The alarm was raised by a neighbour who, upon seeing smoke from the roof, smashed down the front door to check if anyone was in the house. Thankfully, it was unoccupied.

In the space of around half an hour the fire was extinguished and failed to spread to the adjoining house.

Firefighters in action

Three fire engines, several police cars and an ambulance were in attendance.

Westridge Road remains closed with the property in question cordoned off while firefighters extinguish the remains of the fire.

The arson investigation unit, supported by search dogs, are now one the scene. The cause of the fire is still unclear.

The road is in a pleasant area of Portswood, often frequented by drug dealers, prostitutes and alcoholics.
