Update: Lieutenant Commander Ian Molyneux was killed and Lieutenant Commander Christopher Hodge is critically ill in Southampton General hospital. Able Seaman Ryan Donovan has been arrested and charged with one count of murder and 3 of attempted murder. The gunman was apprehended by the leader of Southampton Council, Royston Smith.
Two people are reported to have been shot aboard nuclear submarine HMS Astute, whilst berthed at Southampton Docks. One has been confirmed to have been killed, with the other in a life-threatening condition.
At this stage details remain unclear, however it appears that a crew member has fatally shot one crew mate and left another in critical condition, before being overpowered. Police are assuring local residents there is no threat to public safety and have sealed off the area.
HMS Astute is the newest and most advanced submarine in the UK’s arsenal, worth over a billion pounds. It does not carry nuclear weapons, only conventional Tomahawk missiles like the ones recently used in Libya.
